Monthly injection may protect against HIV infection

Preparations for post-exposure prophylaxis of HIV is traditionally recommended for patients who are at-risk groups. These drugs offer a way to protection for people who do not have HIV, but are subject to a significant risk of infection. The vaginal route is the primary mode of transmission of HIV infection worldwide. It is noted that the gels, and vaginal rings, used to prevent transmission of infection by this method are inefficient compared to tablets because women usually do not adhere to therapy regime.

Scientists have discovered that injections of high doses of a drug called raltegravir once a month or once in a few months could offer the same protection against HIV infection as pills twice a day. The drug has shown to be highly effective in the tests on animals. It was found that two weeks after a single injection raltegravir animals had the same levels of drug in the body, as well as people who take drugs prophylactic agents twice a day. According to experts, a single injection of long-acting formulation leads to a strong suppression of viral load in the blood. Researchers note that Raltegravir operates within the female reproductive tract, while other drugs directed to the entire body.

Experts hope that the new injection will reduce the transmission of HIV because it will be easier for patients to adhere to treatment. One injection of long-acting, allowing for effective protection against HIV, it may be necessary only once a month.
