Unlike neurosis, neuroticism symptoms may also occur in a healthy person. In such cases, it is unable to effectively manage negative emotions - fear, anxiety, guilt, irritability or shyness. Neurotic personality traits multiply the risk of depression, phobias, anxiety disorders, and certain systemic diseases.
An international team of scientists led by the University of Glasgow (Scotland) analyzed data from 106,000 people gathered in three population studies. Using the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire, the experts evaluated their personality traits, and then conducted a genome-wide analysis to detect polymorphisms associated with neuroticism.
It turned out the man neuroticism is inherited in 15% of cases, and a leading role in a play predisposition genes responsible for the production of cortisol (stress hormone). The scientists also found that neuroticism is genetically closely linked to depression and suicidal thoughts and schizophrenia.
The new discovery is of fundamental importance for psychology as help to develop more effective approaches to the treatment of depression, anxiety, neuroses and phobias.
