Drug for the treatment of anxiety and epilepsy can cause birth defects
The study looked at 164 women experts from seven countries taking Pregabalin during pregnancy and 656 pregnant women who were not taking the drug. The findings showed that children of women who used Pregabalin in the first trimester of pregnancy are three times more likely to have serious birth defects than babies of women who did not take anticonvulsants. For example, 6% of women who took pregabalin given birth to children with serious birth defects, while among women who were not taking the drug, there were only 2%. Major birth defects included heart defects and structural problems with the central nervous system or other organs.
