Named way to keep sexual activity in old age
Testosterone, the primary male sex hormone, is vital for sperm production, erectile function and maintain sexual desire. With age, testosterone levels naturally decrease. According to experts, 95% of these cases do not reveal, but in reality hypogonadism - the reduction or absence of hormones secreted by the male testes - are extremely common. They suffer up to 40% of men over the age of 45 years.
The researchers decided to investigate the effectiveness of testosterone replacement therapy in cases of sexual dysfunction in older men.
The study involved 470 men older than 65 years who have low libido and low testosterone levels. In each experiment, the participant was a heterosexual partner who was willing to have sexual contact at least twice a month.
The study was conducted during the year. The men received either testosterone gel (the most common form of testosterone) or placebo gel. Each participant answered questions about their sexual function at baseline and then every 3 months. These items included the frequency of sexual intercourse, nocturnal erections and masturbation.
As a result, it was found that out of 12 indicators of sexuality 10 were significantly improved in men taking testosterone. Only two points were not observed any changes - is "flirting with others" and "spontaneous erections."
While men in the placebo group showed no change.
As a result, scientists have concluded that testosterone therapy improves sexual function of older men.
