For the first time scientifically confirmed poor sleep during a full moon

The study devoted to studying the impact of lunar cycles on human behavior and physiology, the authors recruited 33 volunteers of all ages who have agreed to sleep in the laboratory. During sleep, using the method of electroencephalography (EEG) monitor of their brain activity, eye movement recorded describing the phases of sleep, as well as changes in levels of hormones melatonin and cortisol.

As a result, a direct link between quality of sleep and the phases of the Moon has been revealed. A few days before and a few days after the full moon the duration of deep sleep phases are reduced by 30 percent. Furthermore, in order to sleep, the period in humans takes an average of five minutes longer than usual, and reduced total sleep time 20 minutes. The level of melatonin in the blood responsible for the regulation of sleep and wakefulness cycles, the full moon is reduced.

All study participants complained about the full moon on a bad dream, despite the fact that there were no windows in the room, out of direct visual contact with the satellite and the Earth did not know at what stage it is.

The authors plan to continue the study of the changes in brain activity and physiology that occur during the 29.5-day lunar cycle, in order to try to find the anatomical location of the "lunar" biological clock and elucidate the molecular and neural basis of their actions, and to identify, how the phases of the moon affect the mental and psychological condition of the person.
