THE 3 VITAMINS THAT PREVENT BRAIN LOSS

The statistics say that one in five people older than 70 suffers from cognitive impairment, which can progress to dementia and death in almost 50% of those people in five years. Because of that the older people should pay attention to that phenomenon and do the best to prevent these issues.

When the risk factors are controlled, millions of Alzheimer’s disease cases can be prevented, even though there is still no available cure for it.

According to the 2002 study, which involved 22 participants that suffered Alzheimer’s, the high concentrations of homocysteine found in their blood, affected this disease. That happens as a result of genetic mutations that caused abnormally increased levels of homocysteine in their bodies.

As the homocysteine is a strong, independent risk factor for the development of Alzheimer’s disease and dementia, this risk will be doubled if the blood level is over 14 (µmol/L).

Increased homocysteine in the blood can be reduced by detoxifying the body of them. The experts found that the human body can be detoxified by using three vitamins vitamin B12, folate, and vitamin B6.

For instance, controlled trial showed that vitamins B can reduce the levels of homocysteine, and it can result in slowing the rate of accelerated brain atrophy in people with mild cognitive impairment.

In addition, aging causes an atrophy of the brain, which is accelerated in the case of Alzheimer’s, so, if we manage to slow the rate of brain loss, this will decelerate the progress of this disease.

Researchers found that the treatment patients who suffer from this disease, after 2 years of regular use of B vitamins significantly slowed the rate of brain shrinkage, and reduced the rate of atrophy.

Another, a follow-up study reported that B-vitamin treatment reduces, by as much as seven-fold, the brain atrophy.

Even you are consuming foods rich in B12 and B6, but you do not get sufficient amounts of folate that can be also risky for such diseases. Actually, more than 90 percent of Americans don’t get enough folate through the dark green leafy vegetables.

For that reason, people who face this problem can be oriented to a plant-based diet, which can be a great solution for solving it, as it will lower homocysteine levels by 20% in just one week.

The scientists found that this is due to the fiber amounts in the plants, as every gram of it increases folate levels in the blood nearly 2%. They probably boost vitamin production in the colon by the friendly gut bacteria and as a result, they lower methionine intake.

The plant-based diet is not the only solution, so it should be combined with the proper amount of the vitamin B12. The usual group of people who suffer from hyperhomocysteinemia (excessive amounts of homocysteine in the blood) is vegans, as they do not get the adequate doses of vitamin B12.

Consequently, paying the attention to the balance of these three vitamins might be crucial, and their levels should be optimized regularly, which will prevent brain loss.
