Nasal spray can replace epidural anesthesia
The study showed that the spray with fentanyl was as effective as injections of pethidine, which are commonly used in childbirth. In addition, fentanyl has fewer side effects for the mother and child. Experts also point out that it does not cause the overall effect of numbness compared with epidural anesthesia, and therefore helps to speed up the work.
During the tests the researchers conducted a study of 156 women. More than 80% of women who received fentanyl, said they would use it again, compared with only 44% of women who received pethidine. It is noted that women can control their own income fentanyl dose using nasal spray under the supervision of a midwife, helping them to feel more comfortable and avoid the need for additional intervention and painful injections. The use of fentanyl has also contributed to an easier childbirth, reduce the difficulties with breastfeeding and greater satisfaction.
